Shreyas Iyer is showing that leadership is well within his shoulders. Having steered Punjab Kings to their first IPL final in 11 years, he has now taken SoBo Mumbai Falcons to the semifinals of the T20 Mumbai League, India's top domestic franchise tournament under the Mumbai Cricket Association.
“Captaincy brings in a lot of maturity and responsibility,” Iyer said, reflecting on his rise as a leader. With over 600 runs in IPL 2025 and an inspiring presence on the field, Iyer is now being seen as a serious contender for India’s future white-ball captaincy. There’s even talk of a potential Test call-up for the upcoming series in England.
His captaincy has impressed not only due to performances, but also how he deals with pressure. "I try to live in the moment and accept the situation. Sometimes the crowd transfers that energy, I keep reminding myself I want them to cheer my name," Iyer explained.
Following the IPL final on June 3, Iyer quickly returned to captain the SoBo Falcons. His dedication was evident, and the team complied by winning four out of their five league matches. His calmness, tactical awareness, and people-first mentality have won players' and fans' admiration.
His Punjab Kings teammate, Shashank Singh, shared a moment of emotion during the playoffs, when Iyer visibly erupted in anger after a relaxed dismissal. Singh subsequently confessed, "I deserve it; Iyer should have slapped me." Yet he also credited Iyer with being the best T20 captain he has ever had, explaining how Iyer had taken him out to dinner after the game, demonstrating his capacity to lead without grudges.
Iyer credited the T20 Mumbai League for providing local talent a bigger platform. “The MCA has worked hard to bring this league and offer grassroots players a chance to thrive,” he noted. With the semifinals and final set to be played at Wankhede, Iyer’s journey as a captain continues to gain momentum. His maturity, consistency, and leadership qualities make him a name to watch in India’s cricket plans.
