England’s star batter Joe Root has opened up about Virat Kohli’s retirement from Test cricket, saying he never saw the Indian legend as a rival. While fans often compared Root and Kohli as part of the famous 'Fab Four', Root said he’s always had great respect for Virat.

“I’ve never been in competition with Virat. He’s someone I’ve always admired and thought, ‘Wow, what a player’.
I’ll miss those battles we had on the field,” Root said during a media chat organised by Sony Sports. Over the years, both Root and Kohli have been key players and captains for their teams. Their hunger for runs and consistent performances earned them praise around the world.

Root also spoke about how Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket will change the upcoming five-match series. India and England are set to face off from June 20 at Headingley, Leeds.

“Cricket is poorer without them being around.
They are two Indian legends who have done amazing things for Indian cricket. The series will look different without them, but it will still be tough and competitive,” Root added.

With Rohit stepping away from Test cricket, Shubman Gill has been named India’s new captain, and Rishabh Pant will be his vice-captain. India have also called up young batter Sai Sudharsan for his first Test and brought back Karun Nair after seven years. A fresh chapter begins for Team India in the new World Test Championship cycle.
