New Zealand Captain Sophie Devine to Retire from ODIs After 2025 World Cup

New Zealand women’s team captain Sophie Devine has decided to retire from ODI cricket after the 2025 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. She will still play T20 matches but in a more relaxed way. Earlier this year, Sophie took a short break to look after her mental health. She will lead the team in the World Cup, and New Zealand Cricket fully supports her choice to find a better balance between cricket and life.

New Zealand women’s cricket captain Sophie Devine has announced she will retire from ODI cricket after the World Cup in India and Sri Lanka later this year. The 35-year-old has been one of the most dependable all-rounders in the game, scoring 3,990 runs in 152 ODIs with eight hundreds. She has also scored 3,431 runs in 146 T20 matches and has taken over 100 wickets in both formats.

Although she has never played a Test match, Sophie has made a huge impact in white-ball cricket. Talking about her decision, she said, “It feels like the right time to start stepping away.
I’m really lucky to have the support of New Zealand Cricket and to still be part of the WHITE FERNS in a way that works for me.”

Her retirement news came just before New Zealand Cricket announced its list of centrally contracted players. Sophie won’t be on that list anymore, but she will still be available to play T20Is with a more relaxed schedule.
